SamTrans Passenger Shelters Go Green
SamTrans continues to go green with the replacement of the first of its 200 passenger shelters with contemporary, solar-powered lighted shelters.
The new shelters contain a system map, an area for advertising and trash cans, which will be cleaned twice a week by CBS Outdoor, the company responsible for installing and maintaining the shelters.
The new look boosts SamTrans’ image as more people turn to public transit to escape high gas prices and reduce their carbon footprint to help the environment.
Twelve new shelters have been installed in Redwood City, San Carlos, Belmont and San Mateo along El Camino Real. The older shelters have been removed and the new ones installed over the existing footprint. The shelter replacement project is scheduled to take three years to complete.
SamTrans buses, with an on-time average of approximately 90 percent, travel more than 32,000 miles on 54 routes throughout San Mateo County and into parts of San Francisco and Palo Alto and carry 50,860 passengers on an average weekday.
