San Mateo County families can save money and help the environment this summer when kids “go green” by riding SamTrans.

SamTrans is kicking off sales for its Summer Youth Pass, a three-month flash pass that gives kids unlimited rides on SamTrans from June 1 to Aug. 31. At just $35, the Summer Youth Pass costs 60 percent less than the price of the three regular youth passes.

When kids purchase a Summer Youth Pass, they’re making a positive contribution to the environment and congestion relief, the same as adults who take public transportation to work.

As part of this year’s Summer Youth Pass campaign “Go Green, Take SamTrans,” kids are invited to send in a green tip. One lucky winner will record their tip for a spot on AM 1310 Radio Disney, which will air this summer.

To enter, call the Radio Disney prize line at 1-877-4AM 1310 through May 31 with a green tip. Participants must leave their name, address and phone number. The contest is open to San Mateo County residents 17 and younger. A parent or guardian must give their permission; no purchase is necessary to enter.

The Summer Youth Pass is available to anyone 17 and younger at nearly 100 SamTrans pass sales outlets located throughout the county, including all Safeway stores. The passes also can be ordered by mail.

The pass also is available at the San Mateo County Transit District, 1250 San Carlos Ave. in San Carlos, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
