Paratransit Service
For the past 10 years, Noreen Donohue has relied on SamTrans’ paratransit program. “If it weren’t for
Redi-Wheels, my life would be different,” said the active senior. “I would be staying home a lot more.
There would be no more socializing. No more exercising. Nothing.”
For many like Donohue, whose disabilities prevent her from using regular fixed-route bus service, paratransit is a lifeline to the outside world. SamTrans provides Redi-Wheels on the bayside of the county and RediCoast on the coastside to 7,000 customers.
Each day, 1,000 customers rely on the service to go about their daily activities - keeping doctor’s appointments, running errands, shopping or visiting friends. SamTrans fixed-route buses also have accessibility features to assist riders with disabilities, who may not require Redi-Wheels service.
These include:
- Lifts and ramps to help riders board the bus
- Wheelchair spaces
- Priority seating for seniors and people with disabilities
- Visual and audio bus stop announcements
