Shuttles
Shuttles serve as a vital link in the county’s transportation system. More than 7,000 riders take a free shuttle from a Caltrain or BART station to their workplace every day.
The San Mateo County Transit District helps fund shuttles that serve five BART stations. These shuttles serve about 2,000 riders a day.
The District also helps fund 32 shuttles that serve 16 Caltrain stations. On an average weekday, about 5,000 riders use these shuttles.
In addition to shuttle service from transit centers to work sites, the District helps fund shuttles to fill other needs. For example, in East Palo Alto, a shuttle takes residents to the Palo Alto Caltrain Station.
The Bayshore/Brisbane shuttle is an experiment in a demand-response shuttle service. The shuttle is dispatched by cell phone or booked ahead by the riders. The service is popular and may serve as an example of one way that SamTrans can provide service in the future.
Shuttle funding partners include the San Mateo County Transportation Authority, the City/County Association of Governments and the Bay Area Air Quality Management District. Eight San Mateo County cities and 89 employers also help support the shuttles.
